Risks Associated with Shunting Flatbed Trailers

When shunting loaded flatbed trucks, you need to be extremely careful.

In the example below, the flatbed’s hook has become caught in the gate of the trailer.

The most common incident is the flatbed’s support arm getting caught in the hydraulic arms, but checking the trailer’s gate is just as important.

In this case, the load consisted of walls longer than the flatbed, which meant that the trailer’s gate had to be secured in the raised position. This was not taken into account when the flatbed was parked, and the trailer’s gate caught on the support bracket on the flatbed, which in turn holds the walls upright. Once the support bracket on the flatbed bends forward, the walls are released and tip over. This creates a situation that is, to say the least, life-threatening.
