Below is an example of a flatbed trailer that has been loaded in a way that could cause accidents. The wooden slat is not secured to either the trailer bed or the wall; it is merely wedged at an angle against a metal beam on the trailer bed and the underside of the wall.
This was noted by the driver during the “Self-Inspection” prior to departure. Had the decision been made to transport this load without taking corrective action, there would have been an imminent risk that the wooden slat would come loose during transport, shifting the center of gravity of that wall and causing it to slowly slip out of the clamps that secure the cargo laterally, eventually causing it to tip over.
